ADECS 2018: Might Asia’s submarine fleet shrink rather than grow?

The conventional wisdom being propounded is that the size of Asia-Pacific’s combined submarine fleet will increase greatly, perhaps up to 350 boats by 2030. However, Collin Koh, research fellow at the Maritime Security Programme at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) in Singapore, suggested that this prediction ‘could well be overblown’.

Speaking at the ADECS 2018 conference in Singapore, Koh said that, in fact, the fleet size may shrink to 150-200 submarines by 2030. Indeed, a graph depicting submarine numbers from 1992-2017 indicated a decline already began in around 2012.
