ADECS 2018: ASEAN shipbuilders struggle to climb the food chain

Most countries in the ASEAN region have a local shipbuilding industry – Vietnam, for example, has the fifth largest such industry in the world – although in terms of warship construction many are trapped at the bottom end of the food chain.

Most ASEAN nations ‘have outsized ambitions of increasing self-reliance in naval ships’ according to Richard Bitzinger, senior fellow at the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) in Singapore. 

Major shipbuilders involved in naval work are PT PAL in Indonesia, Boustead in Malaysia, ST Marine in Singapore, Bangkok Dock in Thailand
