Leonardo-Finmeccanica’s VULCANO weapon system will feature Rockwell Collins’ NavFire Precision Positioning Service (PPS) GPS, according to a 13 June company statement from Rockwell Collins.

The VULCANO family will fire with NavFire for naval and artillery applications, providing high accuracy and reduced collateral damage.

The NavStrike military GPS is derived from the field-proven 12-channel NavFire PPS GPS receiver. It provides high performance GPS for tightly coupled GPS/Inertial Navigation System (GPS/INS) integrations.

The NavFire GPS includes the Selective Availability Anti-Spoofing Module (SAASM) to allow decryption of precision GPS observations through over-the-air rekeying. The positioning information is used by the guidance system of the projectile.

Claude Alber, vice president and managing director, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Rockwell Collins, said: ‘We have customised the NavFire receivers for the particular calibre of the ammunition, and provided full support to the customer during and after the firing trials. In the end, our product perfectly matched the demanding performance requirements of our customer.’
