US Army receives second Iron Dome system
A second Iron Dome battery has been delivered by the Israeli MoD to the US Army, OEM Rafael Advanced Defense Systems announced on 4 January.
This followed the arrival in September 2020 of the first Iron Dome system, which is still undergoing an implementation process in the US.
Both batteries will be deployed to protect US troops against against rockets, mortars and other ballistic and aerial threats.
‘I am confident that the system will assist the US Army in protecting American troops from ballistic and airborne threats as well as from developing threats in the areas where US troops are deployed on various missions,’ said Israeli Minister of Defence Benny Gantz.
Iron Dome forms part of the multi-layered Israeli missile defence system, which also includes David’s Sling, Arrow-2 and Arrow-3. On 15 December 2020, the Israel Missile Defense Organization and US Missile Defense Agency completed a series of intercept tests involving all these systems.
