US Army orders 120mm ammunition from Rheinmetall
US Army Contracting Command is to order tank ammunition from German manufacturer Rheinmetall Waffe Munition.
An initial contract will cover 90 120x570mm DM53 penetrator cartridges and 90 120x570mm DM53A1 penetrator cartridges, according to a 6 August online notice from the US federal government.
Rheinmetall claims that the DM53 is the world’s first temperature-independent high-performance tank ammunition, designed for greater accuracy and less erosion of the gun barrel.
DM53 was designed to maximise the performance of projectiles fired from Rheinmetall-made 120mm smoothbore guns such as the L44 or L55, both of which equip variants of the Leopard 2 MBT (pictured).
