Thales UK obtains MIV supplier contract
Thales UK will fully assemble and integrate 500 units of the Protector RS4 RWS (pictured) onto Boxer 8x8 vehicles, as part of the Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV) programme for the British Army.
Under a new £180 million ($251.9 million), ten-year contract from Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) and Rheinmetall Landsysteme, Thales will also deliver 500 of its Acusonic shot detection systems.
The company is acting as strategic partner to Kongsberg Aerospace and Defence, which obtained a NOK1.03 billion ($120 million) subcontract in December 2020 to provide Protector RS4.
The Acusonic Shot Detection System is designed to accurately sense and report the direction of incoming enemy fire. The system will give Boxer crews the situational awareness to react to threats, Thales noted on 19 February
Shephard previously reported that 735 Acusonic systems were on order for integration into the Ajax fleet of armoured vehicles for the British Army.
The £2.3 billion MIV contract for 500 Boxer vehicles was signed in November 2019 between the UK MoD and ARTEC (a JV between Rheinmetall Landsysteme, Rheinmetall Defence Nederland and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann).
