With Russia and China in mind, US nuclear review calls for low-yield weapons

The Pentagon has unveiled the official version of its Nuclear Posture Review, which calls for a revival of nuclear sea-launched cruise missiles and a less powerful ballistic missile warhead that can be launched from submarines.

Citing Russian and Chinese efforts to modernise and expand their portfolio of nuclear weapons, the unclassified document lays out plans for the US to play catch up.

‘While the United States has continued to reduce the number and salience of nuclear weapons, others, including Russia and China, have moved in the opposite direction,’ the NPR says.
