Reviving coastal protection: The renewed focus on shoreline defence

The sinking of the Russian cruiser Moskva has been among a range of incidents and geopolitical developments in recent years that has brought the issue of coastal defence back into the minds of government and defence decision-makers.

The increasing emphasis placed on coastal defence by numerous countries, especially in Europe, has been highlighted by events such as Ukraine’s sinking of the Russian cruiser Moskva with a Neptune missile system in April 2022.

While most coastal artillery disappeared in Western countries many years ago (in the 1950s in the UK and US), Nordic nations including Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden maintained their defences until the Cold War came to an end.

These were a mix of static turret guns, such as the 120mm Bofors ERSTA deployed by Norway and Sweden, mobile artillery and missiles.
