Russia puts ​enhanced BMP-1 into service

There are strong indications that the upgraded BMP-1AM tracked IFV has entered service in Russia.

While there has been no official announcement of this development,  images on Russian social media, taken near Barnaul in Siberia, show a railway train transporting at least 20 BMP-1AMs on open platforms. 

The BMP-1AM was developed under the Basurmanin programme by Uralvagonzavod, as an affordable upgrade of the obsolete BMP-1 that remains in widespread service with the Russian Land Forces and the National Guard of Russia. They operate a combined inventory of about 1,000 vehicles, with some 7,000 more in long-term storage.
