German MoD will improve radio communication with new portable systems

The German MoD will acquire 913 portable radios (AN/PRC-117G) from the American company L3Harris to replace the AN/PRC-117F version. This model and its corresponding previous versions have been in service with the national armed forces for ten years.

Under an effort to improve the communication of the armed forces, the German MoD has announced its intention to acquire 913 portable radios (AN/PRC-117G) from the American company L3Harris to replace the AN/PRC-117F version.

The budget committee of the national parliament gave the green light for the procurement on 28 October. Initially, the MoD intends to purchase 370 radios, and the remaining 543 systems will be acquired between 2021 to 2024.

An official spokesperson for the German MoD explained to Shephard the new portable radio has a modern software-defined radio (SDR) with a wide frequency range that includes wideband, SATCOM
