Latest order for CV90s aligns with revised Norwegian defence policy announced in May 2020.

The Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency has placed a $50 million order with BAE Systems Hägglunds for 20 more CV9030N IFVs.

BAE Systems Hägglunds will manufacture the vehicles in partnership with Norwegian firm Ritek, which is an established industry partner for  the CV90.

Up to 30 Norwegian suppliers will be responsible for upgrading and repairing components, as well as delivering new subsystems and technology solutions ‘as part of future upgrades for the Norwegian CV90 fleet’, BAE Systems announced on 17 February.

Norway already has a fleet of 144 CV90s, as one of seven European militaries to operate the IFV. Other significant life extension and MLU programmes for the CV90 are under way in Switzerland and the Netherlands.

The latest Norwegian procurement is divided into 12 CV90RWS STING engineering variants and eight CV90RWS Multi-BK multi-role variants.

Shephard Defence Insight  believes that these vehicles will be created by upgrading older CV9030N hulls to CV9030 Mk IIIb standard.

Deliveries will be made in 2023.

Norway was planning to commence an upgrade of its CV90 fleet in 2024, but this plan was brought forward following an announcement in May 2020 that defence procurement policy would be geared to support Norwegian industry amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

This new plan called for 20 additional CV90s to be delivered to the Norwegian Army in 2022-2023.
