India’s artillery modernisation woes are legendary, with the army unable to induct new artillery pieces for many years. One solution is the upgrade of existing artillery pieces.
For example, Russian-built M-46 130mm towed howitzers are being upgraded to NATO’s standard 155mm, with 45-calibre barrels fitted. A tender to perform this task was issued in 2014.
Punj Lloyd was one of four companies competing to win this contract to upgrade 300 M-46 guns, a type originally introduced by the Soviet Union in the 1950s, and it recently began price negotiations after being shortlisted.
