Challenge for US combat vehicles

Modernising the US Army’s combat vehicles when significant reductions in numbers and budgets are taking place present certain challenges.

‘There was a time when 46 percent of the Army was mechanized – infantry-wise. But we’re on a path now to be at 13% in the near future,’ warned Col William Chlebowski, chief of the Maneuvre, Aviation and Soldier division in the US Army’s Capabilities Development Directorate.

Speaking at the AUSA Global symposium he added: ‘In fact, in 2004, there were 46 mechanized infantry companies in Iraq. We’re only going to have 36 [in the entire Army] in the future.
