Brazilian Army takes delivery of first LMV-BR
Iveco Defence Vehicles on 27 April officially delivered the first LMV-BR 4x4 light multirole vehicle to the Brazilian Army under the VBMT-LR programme.
Initially, a total of 32 vehicles will equip cavalry and mechanised infantry units; Iveco stated that the remaining 31 are to be delivered by 2022, with final assembly in Brazil at Sete Lagoas.
The VBMT-LR programme includes an overall requirement for 186 vehicles. Italy-based Iveco Defence Vehicles stated that it expects to start production of the next batches in 2022.
The Brazilian Army selected the LMV-BR in 2015 as its VBMT-LR solution. Shephard Defence Insight notes that Brazil expected to sign a contract in July 2018 for 32 LMV-BRs (Light Multirole Vehicle-Brazil) from Italy, and two batches of 77 vehicles to be assembled by Iveco in Brazil.
However, due to economic issues in Brazil, the first $16.2 million contract for 32 LMV-BRs was not signed until November 2019.
Iveco Defence Vehicles already produces Guarani VBTP 6x6 amphibious armoured vehicles for the Brazilian Army. More than 480 of these vehicles have been delivered since 2012, including some to export customers Lebanon and the Philippines.
