AUSA 2016: GD and Boeing embark on laser quest
General Dynamics Land Systems is displaying a Stryker MEHEL 2.0 vehicle that is fitted with a 5kW laser from Boeing.
The plan is to offer the US Army a counter-UAS capable vehicle that employs directed energy to rapidly neutralise targets. MEHEL stands for Mobile Expeditionary High Energy Laser.
Boeing had already tested a 2kW laser but the 5kW laser intends to provide a more powerful system that will be able to destroy more targets much more quickly. Testing of the 5kW laser is expected in January 2017.
