AUSA 2018: AM General to recapitalise HMMWVs for US Army
AM General has received a $51.3 million contract to recapitalise High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV) for the US Army, the company announced on 26 September.
To work on this contract, the company will utilise its public private partnership programme with the Red River Army Depot to deliver mission-capable, like-new M1152 and M1165 HMMWV variants.
The current programme will recapitalise existing US National Guard assets. Selected vehicles will be disassembled, put through a rigorous initial inspection, and modified in accordance with the recapitalisation requirements.
The recapitalised vehicle bodies will then be mated to a new production rolling chassis. The resulting product is a modernised HMMWV with automotive improvements including improved steering geometry for manoeuvrability and increased-capacity 4L85E transmission, improved front mounted HVAC system, new antilock braking system and electronic stability control, and an improved powertrain cooling system.
