US lawmakers aim to ease ‘Buy America’ restrictions on new frigate

To avoid a potential snag in the competition to build the US Navy’s future guided missile frigate (FFG(X)) a congressional panel has approved a proposal to allow the purchase of foreign equipment.

Members of the House Armed Services Committee’s (HASC) Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee contend the provision is needed to prevent most of the bidders from being disqualified under ‘Buy America’ language that the House Appropriations Committee (HAC) recently included in the FY2020 defense appropriations bill.
