UDT 2018: US Mk 48 torpedo upgrade in sight

A contract award for a technological insertion upgrade into the US Navy’s Mk 48 heavyweight torpedo is imminent. Defence sources have told Shephard that an RfP is expected in May and an update to the latest RfI calls for a contract in Q2 this year.

Current plans from NAVSEA PEO Submarines, Undersea Weapons Programme Office (PMS404) propose that this will initiate a four-to-five-year development of the Mk 48 Mod 7 to achieve an initial operating capability in FY24.

Lockheed Martin was contracted in 2016 to re-start the Mk 48 Mod 7 production line to replenish US Navy and overseas customer
