Russian presence near UK waters increases ‘tenfold’

Despite the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) typically keeping mum on Russian activity near UK territorial waters the secretary of state for defence Gavin Williamson today said activity has increased ‘tenfold’.

Speaking at the RUSI First Sea Lord's Sea Power Conference 2018, on May 24 in London, Williamson said: ‘Look at Russia’s resurgence under president Putin, its submarine activity has increased tenfold in the north Atlantic'.

‘In 2010 the RN had to respond once to a Russian navy vessel approaching UK territorial waters. Last year we had to respond 33 times,’ he added.
