D&S 2019: LCS delays throw Malaysian navy plans into turmoil

Malaysia’s troubled Maharaja Lela-class Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) continues to face further delays, with Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu disclosing in parliament on 29 October that the first of six ships will not be delivered until 2023 instead of its originally planned date of April 2019.

Sabu did not give reasons for the delay, only stating that if detailed weaknesses were revealed, it would result in a lack of confidence in Malaysian companies.

Sabu said the six-ship contract from 3 October 2013 to October 2023 had a ceiling of MYR9.1286 billon ($2.212 billion) and that, as at 30 September,
