ADECS 2018: Taiwan pursues indigenous submarines
The Republic of China Navy (ROCN) launched its Indigenous Defence Submarine (IDS) programme in 2016, the goal being to build eight submarines within a decade. According to officials, the IDS is the first priority for indigenous naval shipbuilding.
The preliminary design for the 2,000t submarine will be completed in the first quarter of 2018 after combining key components such as a combat system. Taiwan is hoping to commission its first home-grown submarine in 2025/26.
In 2001 the Bush administration committed to assisting Taiwan to procure eight submarines, but the US only builds nuclear platforms.
