US Army starts NIE 16.2 exercise
The US Army’s Brigade Modernization Command (BMC) has started the Network Integration Evaluation (NIE) 16.2 exercise at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico and Fort Bliss, Texas, it announced on 10 May.
Over 2,700 Soldiers from the 1st Armored Division are participating in the exercise, which runs from 2 May to 14 May 2016. Systems under test at the exercise include the Spider Increment 1A and Warfighter Information Network-Tactical (WIN-T) Increment 3. Spider Increment 1A is a command activated anti-personnel mine munitions system, while WIN-T is an information network comprising multiple radio waveforms and platforms.
Apart from these two, five more systems are being evaluated to include the latest version of the Command Post Computing Environment (CPCE). CPCE Version 2 will offer a common operation map, simplified command post server infrastructure and initial versions of mission command applications.
Brig Gen Terry McKendrick, commanding general, BMC, said: ‘NIE is primarily focused on what we call, 'Programs of Record'. These are systems that have a funding and developmental timeline. Part of that timeline is a formal test and evaluation.
‘We take systems and capabilities and put them in the field, this very demanding force-on-force exercise to replicate battlefield conditions. We then integrate these systems and capabilities with all the other battlefield operating systems to see how they work together, to see where the friction points are that we need to solve.’
