US approves Aegis sale to ROK Navy

South Korea has taken a step closer to the purchase of three Aegis shipboard combat systems, following the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency's (DSCA) notification to Congress of the sale on 9 June.

The deal, worth an estimated US$1.91 billion, covers three each of Aegis systems, MK 41 Vertical Launching Systems, common data link management systems and Northrop Grumman AN/UPX-29(V) IFF interrogators. Equipment will be installed aboard three destroyers to be built for the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN).
