Thales to support tactical radar on Halifax-class frigates
Thales Canada is to continue support for the Smart-S Mk 2 naval air and surface surveillance radar installed on Royal Canadian Navy Halifax-class frigates.
Work on the C$4.6 million ($3.5 million) 12-month contract will begin ‘in fall 2020’, the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND) announced on 20 October.
The total gross potential value of the contract for Thales is C$19 million as there are four additional one-year extension options, the DND added.
The in-service support is an interim measure ‘that will ensure services until a new contract for the Halifax-class Combat System has been awarded and a transition has been completed in 2021’, the DND noted.
This future in-service support contract will combine five existing contracts for Halifax-class combat systems into one long-term contract managed by a single prime contractor.
Smart-S Mk 2 is the primary tactical radar on the Halifax class. According to Shephard Defence Insight, the 3D radar applies a multi-beam concept for automatic stealth target detection out to 250km.
