DefExpo 2016: Thales, BTSL to develop fire control radar
Thales and BEL-Thales Systems (BTSL) have entered into an agreement for the development of the Pharos fire control radar for both gun and missile systems, Thales announced on 29 March.
BTSL is a joint venture between Thales and India-based Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). Under this new cooperation contract, BTSL will develop the radar processing modifications and mechanical design in Bengaluru, India while Thales will design and manufacture the radar antenna.
The Pharos system will meet both Indian and international market requirements. The agreement is in line with the government's ‘Make in India’ programme.
Pharos is a tracking radar that can be used to control medium-calibre guns ranging from 30mm to 76mm for ground-based and naval applications. It is capable of tracking fast moving, small and highly manoeuvrable air and surface targets that may be encountered in littoral missions. It can simultaneously control the engagement of multiple targets with integrated guided ammunition in all weather conditions.
Serge Adrian, senior vice president, surface radars activities, Thales, said: ‘We are pleased to work in close collaboration with BTSL for the development of this new type of fire control sensor to address the needs of the Indian and global markets. This strategic step goes beyond the co-development partnership; it reaffirms our commitment to the country and to actively contribute to the ‘Make in India’ policy.’
