South Korea mulls extra AEW&C aircraft

The South Korean air force is planning to add two Boeing E-737 airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft to its fleet.

The acquisition of these two aircraft are part of a long-term plan, with no dates being specified yet. 

The Yonhap news agency in South Korea reported on 9 October that the additional aircraft would mean Seoul is better able to have a continuous AEW&C presence in the air around the clock.

The ability to monitor North Korea, as well as areas farther afield such as China and Japan, has assumed critical importance for the South Korean military. Tensions
