Airbus Defence & Space used the occasion of Singapore Airshow 2018 to reveal future plans for a family of specialist aircraft based on the A320neo airliner, including maritime patrol and ISR.

Fernando Alonso, head of military aircraft at Airbus Defence & Space, broached the ambition in a media briefing at the exhibition on 7 February. However, it is a long-term proposal dependent on customer interest, although several armed forces have expressed enthusiasm so far.

A320neo-based aircraft, leveraging its highly efficient next-generation engines, could perform multiple missions or they could be separate variants such as maritime patrol, ISR and VIP transport.
