Second BMD radar for Japan

7th January 2015 - 10:55 GMT | by Gordon Arthur in Hong Kong

The US has deployed a second X-band Raytheon AN/TPY-2 radar system to Japan.

The US DoD announced on 29 December that the radar, which is a key element in joint US-Japanese ballistic missile defence (BMD), is sited at the Kyogamisaki Communications Site in Kyoto Prefecture.

The first AN/TPY-2 phased-array radar was deployed at the Japan Air Self-Defence (JASDF) Shariki Sub Base in Aomori prefecture in September 2006 to detect North Korean missile launches across the Sea of Japan. The first radar is in northern Japan while the new one is farther south to close gaps in coverage.
