RAF ISTAR Force moves forward with transformation

The UK's Royal Air Force (RAF) is moving forward with an ambitious plan to transform its intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR) force to enable greater interoperability between platforms and personnel, and ultimately improve intelligence exploitation across the force.

According to RAF officials speaking at SMI Group’s Airborne ISR conference on 24 October, the ‘mandate for transformation’ of the ISTAR force was approved in September 2018 following several studies since the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR). 

That includes 120 recommendations that the RAF will have to take forward into any transformation plan, which is known as Project
