Mini towed array for USVs

British firm SEA was promoting an innovative, small-diameter, digital towed array sonar at the Pacific 2015 International Maritime Exposition in Sydney from 6-8 October.

Following an analogue system unveiled in 2012, the company’s second-generation passive acoustic array was introduced to the market last year. It is named KraitArray, after an eponymous banded sea snake.

What is special about this array is its diminished diameter. Starting with an existing 90mm-diameter size, SEA has successfully reduced it to just 16mm. This major reduction in size and corresponding drag means a towed array can now be towed behind small boats, and even unmanned
