Luxembourg launches first military satellite

Luxembourg’s first military satellite, GovSat-1, was successfully launched into orbit onboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 Rocket from Florida on 31 January.

The launch of the platform was pushed back by a day to enable the SpaceX team to replace a second stage sensor on board the aircraft.

The satellite, developed as part of a joint venture between SES and the Luxembourg government, is aimed exclusively at government and military users.

The project represents the first time a public-private venture has operated SATCOM services in governmental and military frequencies.

SES has not ruled out participating in similar joint ventures with other nations,
