Farnborough: Sentinel advances to 2018

Raytheon has outlined its planned investment in the UK RAF’s Sentinel R1 long-range surveillance aircraft following Prime Minister David Cameron’s announcement yesterday to extend its employment through to 2018.

Speaking at the Farnborough International Airshow, Jim Hvizd, VP for business development at Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems, said that the company will develop a maritime capability and improve software in the dual-mode radar system.

The development will take place over two years and will allow five Sentinel aircraft to remain in-service with the RAF out to 2018. One of the aircraft will be used to carry out development work and
