EW Europe: App encryption threatens surveillance

The increasing use of commercial products such as the internet and smartphones by terrorist organisations to carry out their operations presents a new challenge to the military electronic warfare community.

The encryption available to users of such products is easy to get, accessible and free, a defence official told a workshop at the EW Europe exhibition in Rotterdam.

Extremist organisations are effectively using commercial tools such as YouTube and Facebook and other social network and online propaganda magazines to further their cause and get recruits.
