EW Europe 2018: US Navy's EW modernisation continues

The US Navy’s modernisation of its ageing electronic warfare equipment, including the acquisition of a new helicopter-borne EW pod, is continuing as the service attempts to strengthen its surface vessel's defences against new-generation anti-ship missile threats.

Two of the navy's key EW programmes are the Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program (SEWIP) Block 2 and the Advanced Off-board Electronic Warfare (AOEW) programme.

The latter will deliver a brand new electronic surveillance and attack capability to the navy’s fleet of MH-60 Romeos and Sierras, while SEWIP Block 2 is a revamp of the navy’s existing AN/SLQ-32 EW systems on its large surface
