China’s ‘sloppy’ American spy

The US Justice Department (DOJ) issued a felony complaint against Ron Hansen, a former US intelligence officer, on 2 June, alleging he worked for Chinese intelligence.

Hansen served in the US Army and Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) as a case officer in human intelligence (HUMINT) and signal intelligence before retiring in 2006. Fluent in Mandarin and Russian, Hansen worked as a DIA HUMINT ‘case officer’ from 2000-06.

According to the DOJ, he was trained in ‘managing assets, deterring surveillance, avoiding detection and handling classified and sensitive information’.

However, a former US intelligence officer described Hansen’s arrest a result of ‘sloppy’
