Canada faces capability gap in space surveillance

The Canadian armed forces are exploring technology options for a new satellite system to fill a looming capability gap in the nation’s space situational awareness (SSA) capabilities.

Increasing awareness of the extent to which military and civilian critical national infrastructure is reliant on systems operating within the space domain, including technology such as GPS, is driving up investment and development of technology that tracks and protects critical space assets.

Currently the Canadian government receives space-based situational awareness via its Sapphire satellite system which is a contributing sensor to the US Space Surveillance Network (SSN).
