Boeing has selected BAE Systems to develop and manufacture new, all-digital electronic warfare systems for the US Air Force’s (USAF) F-15 fighter aircraft fleet, BAE Systems announced on 1 October.

The move is a part of a multi-billion dollar programme for the development of the Eagle Passive Active Warning Survivability System (EPAWSS) that will enhance situational awareness, provide advanced aircraft protection with advanced electronic countermeasures, and support future USAF F-15 mission needs.

EPAWSS will provide enhanced electronic warfare capabilities in a smaller footprint than with TEWS. It will improve radar warning and increase chaff and flare capability, and is designed to meet future F-15 needs such as the ability to detect and defeat threats in contested and highly contested environments.

The system will replace the current F-15 Tactical Electronic Warfare Suite (TEWS), which has been used by the UASF since 1980s. Updated electronic warfare system is scheduled to be in service through 2040.

Brian Walters, vice president and general manager, electronic combat solutions, BAE Systems, said: ‘This selection builds on our extensive electronic warfare legacy, a history we were able to leverage to develop an executable, affordable, and low-risk solution for the F-15 fleet.

By upgrading to an enhanced all-digital system, the air force, in conjunction with the platform prime, Boeing, will provide next-generation electronic warfare capability to F-15C and F-15E aircraft to help keep the platform capable and mission-ready against current and future threats.’
