AUSA 2018: US Army looks to beef up drone defences with Q-53

The US Army is set to take on several modified AN/TPQ-53 counter-rocket, artillery and mortar (C-RAM) radars from Lockheed Martin that will have an expanded counter-UAS mode for forward deployed forces.

The service has contracted Lockheed Martin to deliver six modified AN/TPQ-53 as an urgent operational requirement, and according to company officials those units are going through final development testing and will be delivered soon.

The additional capabilities effectively turn the S-band sensor into an air surveillance radar rather than just dedicated to the C-RAM role.
