American E-11A BACN aircraft crashes in Afghanistan

The E-11A Battlefield Airborne Communications Node (BACN) aircraft is a rare platform in the USAF, and one of just four in service crashed near Ghazni in Afghanistan on 27 January.

According to images that quickly circulated on social media, the aircraft, bearing the serial number ‘11-9358’, crashed in Deh Yak district, an area about 130km southwest of Kabul said to be under Taliban control. The Taliban was swift to claim to have shot it down.

Gen David Goldfein, the USAF Chief of Staff, confirmed the identity of the aircraft. He said on the same day as the crash: ‘It appears
