US can use five Philippine bases

The US will be permitted to use five military bases in the Philippines under the auspices of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA).

The EDCA was originally signed on 28 April 2014, however, it took until 18 March this year for the two countries to announce specifics about which bases the US will store military supplies and maintain a rotational presence.

The delay was caused by the Philippine constitutional process, with a case taken through the Supreme Court that was only resolved in January, despite the country being concerned about the growing grip of China on the South China Sea.
