US considers Harpoon sale to Egypt
The US State Department has made a determination approving a potential Foreign Military Sale (FMS) of UGM-84L Harpoon Block II encapsulated missiles to Egypt, it was announced on 13 May.
The estimated cost of the FMS is $143 million. Egypt has requested 20 UGM-84L Harpoon Block II missiles in total and two certification training vehicles. Training, equipment and spares/repair support have also been requested.
The missiles will equip the Egyptian Navy’s Type 209 submarines, providing enhanced maritime security and anti-surface warfare capabilities.
The Harpoon Block II encapsulated missile is the submarine-launch version of the Harpoon over-the-horizon, anti-ship missile system. It has a low-level, sea-skimming cruise trajectory, and uses active radar guidance.
Boeing will be the prime contractor of the sale if it goes ahead.
