A UK parliamentary committee on 14 May launched an inquiry into the ongoing contribution by the armed forces in the country’s response to COVID-19.

The Defence Select Committee will seek to evaluate UK military preparedness and resilience; the nature of the armed forces’ support for civilian authorities throughout the pandemic; and the pressure this has placed on the armed forces.

Furthermore, the committee will ask how the MoD ensures that adversaries do not take advantage of the situation in the short-term.

Chair of the committee, Tobias Ellwood, said: ‘It is vital that we take this opportunity to reflect on the nature of Defence’s contribution at all levels including Cabinet level-strategic planning, local resilience efforts and support taskings including transport and logistics.’

Ellwood added that ‘the lessons we learn from coronavirus can be applied more broadly, helping to shape our understanding of the military’s wider position and response to threats and national emergencies’.

Submissions to the inquiry must be made before midnight on 15 June.
