Unprecedented missile intercept test may stoke Gulf interest

​David’s Sling was tested simultaneously with an upgraded Iron Dome system and the Arrow ballistic missile interceptor — some of these capabilities could appeal to Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

The Israel Missile Defense Organization and US Missile Defense Agency announced on 15 December that they have successfully completed a series of intercept tests involving all tiers of the Israeli missile defence umbrella.

For the first time, the David’s Sling system was tested simultaneously with an upgraded Iron Dome system and ballistic missile interceptors Arrow-2 and Arrow-3.

The upgrade to Iron Dome indicates that the system can now intercept UAVs and cruise missile as well as rockets – this is potentially significant given the situation in southern Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.
