Brexit leaves future UK-EU defence relationship undefined

​More clarity is needed on how a post-Brexit UK, with its ambitions for ‘Global Britain’, regards mainland Europe in terms of defence and security.

The UK has now left the EU with a trade deal, which seemed unlikely as 2020 drew to a close. Much of the public debate focused on issues of sovereignty and control, with relatively little interest or attention paid on the security implications of Brexit.

Yet it is in the field of defence and security that some of the most significant changes to the UK-EU relationship may occur. Although the UK left the EU as an organisation, it had originally wanted to maintain a close security relationship with European nations.

The final agreement, though, seems to water this down,
