NATO eyes 5G but proceeds with caution

NATO is exploring the potential of 5G for fast and effective military communication through secure networks. However, the alliance lacks a specific policy and strategy for 5G, and a balance must be struck between the opportunities and threats that the technology presents.

NATO is analysing military applications for 5G technology, to enhance operational efficiency among member states and prepare for the battlefield of the future.

However, while there are benefits to be gained from military use of 5G, security concerns cannot be ignored.

Speaking at the launch of the NATO Annual Report on 16 March, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg explained that the alliance has been addressing threats related to foreign ownership and foreign control of 5G technology.
