Germany spends big on digitalisation and guided munitions

The German Armed Forces are poised for a funding injection, after parliament gave the green light to new investment with an emphasis on digitalisation and smart munitions.

Around €2.1 billion ($2.50 billion) was approved by the Budget Committee of the Federal Parliament on 9 September.

BWI (an in-house MoD company) will receive around €1.6 billion to perform IT services and advance the digitalisation of the armed forces' health system between 2021 and 2027.

Some German analysts are puzzled by this development. Torben Schütz, a research fellow for armament policy at the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), explained to Shephard
