China’s extravagant territorial claims in the South China Sea, its testing of Japanese resolve around the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands and its gradual operational expansion into the Indian Ocean have all gained widespread attention. However, Beijing’s lustful glances towards the poles – the Arctic and Antarctic – have not received the same publicity.
