With China accounting for 51% of the $6.45 billion in foreign direct investment in Cambodia last year, many view the Southeast Asian nation as a neo-colonial client state of China. Amidst this economic and political dependency, there are persistent allegations that China will set up a naval base, and perhaps more, in the country.
