Insight: Where will Sino-Philippine defence ties end up?

When the Philippines hosted the third iteration of the ADAS defence and security exhibition in Manila from 26-28 September, eight Chinese companies registered to exhibit, representing a significant Chinese effort to tap into the Philippine defence and homeland security market.

Notable, though, was the absence of big Chinese players such as Poly Technologies, AVIC or Norinco that make equipment such as armoured vehicles, small arms, aircraft and UAVs.

Instead, those exhibitors at ADAS 2018 included lesser-known radio equipment companies such as Hytera and surveillance camera firms such as Hikvision.
