Z-8G medium helicopter enters PLA service

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) ground force formally welcomed two Changhe Z-8G medium helicopters into service on 4 January, according to a report by state broadcaster CCTV (pictured).

This new transport variant is also commonly referred to as the Z-18A. The army has begun fielding it after four years of extensive testing, including at high altitudes on the Tibet Plateau, and it will likely replace older Z-8A/B helicopters.

The first unit to operate the type is the 161st Air Assault Brigade of the 83rd Group Army, which is allocated to the Central Theatre Command.
